Wishing on Wednesday: Wish

Book: Wish by Alexandra Bullen

Release Date: January 1, 2010

Synopsis: For broken-hearted Olivia Larsen, nothing can change the fact that her twin sister, Violet, is gone... until a mysterious, beautiful gown arrives on her doorstep. The dress doesn't just look magical; it is magical. It has the power to grant her one wish, and the only thing Olivia wants is her sister back.

With Violet again by her side, both girls get a second chance at life. And as the sisters soon discover, they have two more dresses-and two more wishes left. But magic can't solve everything, and Olivia is forced to confront her ghosts to learn how to laugh, love, and live again.

In a breathtaking debut from Alexandra Bullen, WISH asks the question: If you could have anything, what would you wish for?

I want to read this because:

  • The Theme
  • Intriguing Plot
  • Debut Author
  • Amazing Cover

I'm extremely excited to buy this on Friday. Hopefully!

Shadowland by Alyson Noel

Title: Shadowland
Author: Alyson Noel
Series: The Immortal Series #3
Pages: 339, hardcover

Publisher: St. Martins Griffin

Age Group: Young Adult

Overall Rating:

At the start of this breathtaking novel, Damen and Ever travel to Summerland in search of an antidote to reverse a powerful poison. But instead of the cure they seek, they find something far more sinister: the truth about their existence and the fate lying in wait of an immortal’s soul.

Now, with Damen fighting to save them from the Shadowland, Ever turns to magick, hoping to break Damen’s curse. Along the way Ever encounters the mysterious Jude, finding herself drawn to him in a way that will test her love for Damen like never before . . .

Intriguing plot, but not enough to satisfy me in Shadowland. The Immortal series started off strong. I loved the other 2 books books. But, it was different with Shadowland. The new concept of the shadowland was introduced, but it lacked plot. It irritated me to keep reading. I wanted the suspense and intrigue to last longer. I wanted to be interested, but it didn't.

In the beginning, it grabbed me as Damen and Ever couldn't kiss or touch with the fear of their DNA mixing. It kept me intrigued, it kept me wanting more. I really liked the concept. How Ever and Damen dealt with their dilemma. They both wanted to star over after their mistakes and wrong choices. But, at some point it lost me. Noel introduced new characters, twist and turns, etc. nothing which I never learned much about. I actually felt that Noel had lost control of the plot. I still have hope in the story, but the writing wasn't Noel's strongest point.

To me it felt like everything in the plot was recycled from the 2 other books. Not much changed and nothing was really happening in the story. I hate to say it, but alot of characters got really annoying like how, Haven had a memorial service the for death of her cat. All the time, it felt like the series should only be one book.

I believe the plot line throughout the books in the series are original, interesting, but all of this was poorly used. It has all of the elements, the theme is something we want to read about, but it didn't happen in Shadowland. See if you like it for yourself, but it just was not for me. Overall, there were times I did start to like it, even if these didn't last long, I still have faith in the next book being better. Noel might surprise us!

My Own Read-A-Thon

It's been quite hard for me to tackle my To-Be-Read Pile. So, due to my soon intake of books. I'll have to read these before I buy more. I'm through being a reading slum. The only thing that stops me from investing my time reading is my computer. I find myself always looking at book blogs I read A LOT of them, and looking for more books making my wishlist even longer. To put a stop to this I'll be reading all books in my TBR pile this week. I'm really looking forward to getting more, so these must be read now.

I'm going to be doing a read-a-thon. Somewhat, I'll be reading all of these this week. So, I can get reviews posted. No school this week, so I must take advantage of it and read. Which, I really love. And, I'm sure you all hate to see so many memes.

I may be on internet vacation this week, but I'm not sure. So, if I don't blog tomorrow it means I'll be absent from posting, until Thrusday. In the end, it's a good thing. This means more reviews. And, this would mean I can buy more books. Yay!

In My Mailbox (12)

In My Mailbox is a meme created by The Story Siren and inspired by Alea of Pop Culture Junkie! It is a list of the books that I've have received over the previous week, either in the mail, from the bookstore, or from trades.

Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

Title: Chasing Brooklyn
Author: Lisa Schroeder
Pages: 412, paperback

Publisher: Simon Pulse

Age Group: Young Adult
Release Date: January 5, 2010

Overall Rating:

Restless souls and empty hearts.

Brooklyn can’t sleep. Her boyfriend, Lucca died a year ago, and now their friend Gabe has died of an overdose. Every time she closes her eyes, Gabe's ghost is there, waiting for her. She has no idea what he wants or why it isn't Lucca chasing her through her dreams.

Nico can’t stop. He’s always running, trying so hard not to feel the pain of missing Lucca. But when he begins receiving messages from his dead brother, telling him to help Brooklyn, emotions come crashing to the surface.

As the nightmares escalate and the messages become relentless, Nico reaches out to Brooklyn. But neither of them can admit that they're being haunted. Until they learn to let each other in, not one soul will be able to rest.

Talking about this book is hard for me. There are so many emotions expressed that it blew my mind. I can say it touched my heart. It was heartwarming, tear-jerking, heartfelt, loving, yet inspirational, and fascinating all in one book. From looking at the cover I knew the tone of the book was going to be gloomy, haunting, and eerie. All combine to make a great book.

This book takes offs after it's been 1 year since Lucca's death. His death hurt emotionally Brooklyn, his girlfriend and Nico his brother. They both try to find something to lessen the pain of his death. But, both find themselves wanting to disappear and runaway from the pain, but can't. Gabe, a friend of Brooklyn, dies of an overdose and then contacts her as a ghost. Whereas, Nico is contacted by Lucca. This brings sorrow to them. Brooklyn wants to be contacted by Lucca's ghost. And, Nico doesn't know why Lucca tells him to help Brooklyn. In search of a solution, Brooklyn and Nico get close like never before. They both can't acknowledge they are being haunted. Until they do, they won't find peace....

While reading this, I could feel the pain of the two main characters. The writing engrossed me in the reading of Chasing Brooklyn. It was so heartbreaking that I wanted to know where Nico and Brooklyn would end up. I felt that they were searching for healing for hope, and they couldn't find it. Even if the tone was sometimes a little depressing, I found myself laughing too.

The story is narrated from Nico and Brooklyn's points of view. You can see how they both try to hang on and survive the situation they are both in. This book was written in verse like Lisa's other books. This actually makes the story flow better. As of my opinion, the characters are well-developed and you can see they have different personalities.

It is an easy read and while reading you will experience many emotions all of which made me want to read Lisa's other books. The plot clearly has different messages all of which will stay with me for a while. I absolutely had fun reading this.

Overall this supernatural book is worth your time. And will easily draw you into the characters lives. As for me, I'll be sure to buy my copy to re-read it when it comes out January 5th.

As part of the ARC Tour, I needed to take a photo of one word describing the book, or the tone of the book, etc. I picked Heartbreaking. As of my opinion, it describes the tone of the book. And, both Brooklyn and Nico were somewhat heartbroken.

The Naughty List by Suzanne Young

Title: The Naughty List
Author: Suzanne Young
Pages: 239, paperback

Publisher: Razorbill

Age Group: Young Adult
Release Date: February 4, 2010

Overall Rating:

As if being a purrfect cheerleader isn’t enough responsibility! Tessa Crimson’s the sweet and spunky leader of the SOS (Society of Smitten Kittens), a cheer squad–turned–spy society dedicated to bringing dastardly boyfriends to justice, one cheater at a time. Boyfriend-busting wouldn’t be so bad . . . except that so far, every suspect on the Naughty List has been proven 100% guilty!

When Tessa’s own boyfriend shows up on the List, she turns her sleuthing skills on him. Is Aiden just as naughty as all the rest, or will Tessa’s sneaky ways end in catastrophe?

The Naughty List. Is your boyfriend on it?

The Naughty List was fun, exciting and original. It was packed with cheating, backstabbing, romance, and spying on cheaters. The cover is eye candy, the first time I saw the cover I became eager to read it. From the cover you get cute, love relationships, cheating, drama, and hook-ups, which all complement the book.

Head Cheerleader and Smitten Kitten is Tessa Crimson. Along with her cheerleader friends run an undercover 2 year business that hunts, spies, and goes through odds and ends to catch cheaters on the act. The SOS is contacted by worried girlfriends with suspicions that their boyfriends are cheating. Sadly all cases always come back as 100% cheater. However, Tessa still believes not all guys will cheat, especially Aiden her love interest. Tessa believes Aiden will never cheat, that their love is too powerful. Later, Tessa is chocked to find he indeed may be cheating. Even then Tessa believes is not all over and battles her way to get back Aiden. Can it become a reality or just be her worst nightmare?

All together this book was well-developed and of huge interest to me. Young's writing was entertaining, amusing, and engaging. From the first few chapters, I was hooked. The overall idea and theme were original. The idea of girls going undercovered catching cheaters, their missions, and the romance fascinated me. Along the way when reading were surprising twist and turns, these held my attention throughout the book.

For the most part, all the characters had distinctive personalities, however the cheerleaders were too sweet with no attitude. It seemed as they didn't have attitude for cheerleaders. They would replace curse words with things like Strawberry Smoothie etc. At times it was way too cute and adorable. For too much cuteness it only gets 4 stars. Nonetheless, a great read.

The clever remarks, humorous dialogue, and the development of this book kept me entertained. It's safe to say, I'm a fan of the series. And, now waiting for the sequel to come out in summer 2010.

On my Wishlist (3)

On My Wishlist is a weekly meme hosted by Book Chick City. It allows us to share the books we haven't bought yet but are waiting to be bought and devoured. If you are anything like me then your wishlist is getting longer by the day! This post is featured on Wednesday, but I will do mine on Thursday, as its a way that I can organize the books I may buy during the weekend.

Title: Hush, Hush
Author:
Becca Fitzpatrick

Genre: YA

After hearing all the hype about this book, I've decided to finally buy it. This is a MUST on my list.

Summary: For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along.

With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Title: Fallen
Author: Lauren Kate
Genre: YA

I've fallen for the fallen, this is also a big MUST.

Summary: There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move. Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Title: The Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins
Genre: YA

This is also one of those books with big hype. I WANT it.

Summary: Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Katniss' sister is chosen by lottery, she steps up to go in her place.

Title: Viola in Reel Life
Author: Adriana Trigiani
Genre: YA

The main charater sounds alot like me, so I want to try it out.

Summary:

I'm marooned.

Abandoned.

Left to rot in boarding school . . .

Viola doesn't want to go to boarding school, but somehow she ends up at an all-girls school in South Bend, Indiana, far, far away from her home in Brooklyn, New York. Now Viola is stuck for a whole year in the sherbet-colored sweater capital of the world.

Ick.

There's no way Viola's going to survive the year—especially since she has to replace her best friend Andrew with three new roommates who, disturbingly, actually seem to like it there. She resorts to viewing the world (and hiding) behind the lens of her video camera.

Boarding school, though, and her roommates and even the Midwest are nothing like she thought they would be, and soon Viola realizes she may be in for the most incredible year of her life.

But first she has to put the camera down and let the world in.

Title: Rumors
Author: Anna Godbersen
Genre: YA

I need the sequel to the Luxe! So, it may be reasonable to buy this.

Summary:

After bidding good-bye to New York's brightest star, Elizabeth Holland, rumors continue to fly about her untimely demise.

All eyes are on those closest to the dearly departed: her mischievous sister, Diana, now the family's only hope for redemption; New York's most notorious cad, Henry Schoonmaker, the flame Elizabeth never extinguished; the seductive Penelope Hayes, poised to claim all that her best friend left behind—including Henry; even Elizabeth's scheming former maid, Lina Broud, who discovers that while money matters and breeding counts, gossip is the new currency.

As old friends become rivals, Manhattan's most dazzling socialites find their futures threatened by whispers from the past. In this delicious sequel to The Luxe, nothing is more dangerous than a scandal . . . or more precious than a secret.
