Cindy Ella by Robin Palmer

Title: Cindy Ella
Author: Robin Palmer

Pages: 264, paperback
Publisher: Speak
Age Group: Middle Grade/Young Adult
Pub. Date: February 2008
Overall Rating:
Prom fever has infected LA, especially Cindy's two annoying stepsisters, and her overly Botoxed stepmother. Cindy seems to be the only one immune to it all. But her anti-prom letter in the school newspaper does more to turn Cindy into Queen of the Freaks than close the gap between the popular kids and the rest of the students. Everyone thinks she's committed social suicide, except for her two best friends, the yoga goddess India and John Hughes-worshipping Malcolm, and shockingly, the most popular senior at Castle Heights High and Cindy's crush, Adam Silver. Suddenly Cindy starts to think that maybe her social life could have a happily ever after. But there's still the rest of the school to deal with. With a little bit of help from an unexpected source and a fabulous pair of heels, Cindy realizes that she still has a chance at a happily ever after.

Cindy Ella was cute, fluffy, and bubbly. The premise of Cindy Ella is quite fabulous, engaging, and wonderful. My first impressions of Cindy Ella weren't great, but in the end there was a small/weak surprising ending that made it somewhat better. But, none of it was enough for me.

Cindy Ella is living "average" in L.A. Her life revolves around superficial, materialistic, and cosmetic-oriented people. With prom coming up her school newspaper is writing all about prom, she is bothered by it all and takes matters to her hands. She writes a strongly worded letter to the editor. Most of her classmates end up being offended by it, especially her family. Cindy Ella discovers her best-friends are attending, she must go along with it......

This fairy-tale, cinderalla-ish, tale was many things interesting, short of enjoyment, and good read. What kept me reading was the writing, it flowed so naturally it kept me reading. Most of the time, I liked Cindy Ella's voice in the story. She was humorous, clever, and up-lighting. The world is Cindy Ella was pretty interesting, L.A. life living rich, pink, and fabulous .

When it comes to the plot there was no master-mind behind it. It wasn't well crafted. Everything about this reminded of the movie "A Cinderella Story" I found this book to be unoriginal. The whole prom theme was just nothing special. Out of all the books out there revolving around prom this one doesn't stand out. Most of it was too much, but still a good read.

I would have loved some humor, but there wasn't much. Most of the time all the characters were annoying. Half the book made me roll my eyes. In the end, this book didn't wow me. But, I did like the "surprising" twist in the end. ll together, it was just a quick, easy, and light read for a rainy or lonely day. It can potentially be loved by countless others!

Plot: (7/10)
Characters: (7/10)
Ending: (7/10)
Enjoyment: (7/10)
Cover: (7/10)
Overall: 35/50 = 70% = C-

Not impressive. I wouldn't purchase it unless it was at the bargain sections, which is what I did.

In a library setting, this would be a good book for the YA section. It would attract those who are not necessarily serious readers. I can see it appealing to many. It will have people reading and that is a good trhing.
